How to prepare for therapy?
Congratulate Yourself for Seeking Therapy for your child. Seeking help for your child is a courageous step. Therapy may seem daunting and carry various stigmas, but it offers numerous positive and beneficial aspects that you will discover very soon. You deserve to congratulate yourself and your child for wanting to get the help they need.
Is it just my child who will be receiving therapy?
We work in a holistic way, which means we include the family. We believe it is important for the family to be connected through your child’s therapy journey. Family meetings are booked every 6 weeks and aim to gain an understanding of how therapy has been going for your child, and for your family.
How long will I be in therapy?
The duration you / your child will be in therapy depends on their needs and how they respond to therapy. Therapy is a process and shouldn’t be rushed, however therapists will always work towards an end goal for therapy, as the aim for therapy is that it will not be forever.
What is your process at BBTC?
The first step is to book a consultation. The consultation offers the time and space for us to get to know your specific situation, and what you are looking for in therapy. Prior to the consultation, we send you a structured developmental history form which we will need prior to your consultation. This will help us learn more about your child and also select the most appropriate practitioners to lead your consultation.
Does my child need to be in the consultation?
Your child does not need to be in the consultation. Your child will be assessed over the first five sessions so we can create their bespoke programme.
What is your "Why" for therapy?
Your therapist will ask you about what brought you to therapy because understanding your purpose helps the therapist develop a tailored plan for the sessions. Create a list of your symptoms, including troublesome thoughts, emotions, behaviours, past experiences, and current stressors. While you don’t need to detail all your concerns and goals, having a general idea of why you are seeking therapy will help you feel more prepared for your first visit.
How do I determine why I'm seeking therapy?
Your process might look like this: Set aside 10-15 minutes to think about why you want therapy. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be interrupted. Use a special notebook and pen to jot down your therapy goals. Make the process enjoyable by sipping tea or a healthy drink. Play music or sit in silence, whichever helps you think. Focus on your end goal: How do you want to feel, think, and act after therapy? Brainstorm freely and organise your thoughts later. Write down what is currently preventing you from feeling this way.
